Giving Him the Note
Chloe, who was standing outside the study, quietly lowered her head and bit her lip bitterly.
Harold coughed several times. “Fine, whatever you want. But I have to remind you that this child will
affect your relationship with Chloe. You have to be mentally prepared.”
“Chloe agreed to it. She’s magnanimous.”
Harold glared at Joseph, a storm brewing in his eyes. “It’s not that she’s being magnanimous. She’s
just compromising because she doesn’t have a choice out of her love for you.”
“I’ll be nicer to her and won’t let her down.” Gloominess crept up Joseph’s demonically handsome face.
He pondered over it seriously. “We’ll have our own child in the future. It isn’t bad for the two children to
grow up together.”
Harold became tired so he waved for Joseph to leave. “Tell Chloe to come in.”
Joseph agreed. When he opened the door, he found himself looking into Chloe’s eyes.
The latter was just standing outside.
Chloe shot him a cold gaze, her face was full of displeasure. She hated the situation of having the
same father but different mothers. It might be fine when the children were young, but when they grew
up and started to gain a sense of autonomy, they would naturally compete to be favored. It would be
hard to maintain fairness.
She could devote her whole heart to Xavia’s child because she was well aware of this.
“Sweetie, come in.” Harold stuck his head out and waved at Chloe. He said kindly, “I have something
for you.”
Chloe suppressed her frustration, straightened her back, and brushed past Joseph. She walked into
the study as she beamed. She then slammed the door shut behind her.
Bang!
The harsh wind hit Joseph’s face as if it were a quiet slap. With two hands in his pocket, he stared
gloomily at the tightly closed door.
Harold fished out a faded envelope. “This is the note Joseph’s father left behind. I think it’s time for you
to have it. I’ll only live for another few years at most.”
It was hard to recover from organ failure, and he did not know if he could be cured. But he had entered
his golden years, and he was fine regardless of how many more days he had left.
“Grandpa, please don’t say such things. Listen to the doctor and actively cooperate with the doctor
during the treatment. You’ll recover.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll hold on. I’m still waiting for you to give me a great-grandchild.”
Chloe unconsciously touched her belly. “But Grandpa, it’s not that I don’t want to get pregnant. It’s
Joseph. He doesn’t want another child for the time being.”
Harold was stunned before he sighed. “He’s been under immense pressure recently. He has to handle
both the Whitman Group and Fairlight. And there’s the matter regarding Fleurette too… It’ll be fine after
a while.”
“Yes, I know.”
Chloe left with the note. She hesitated for a while and wondered if she should open it and read it. After
wrestling with her feelings for a few minutes, she decided not to open it. She went to the bedroom and
put it on the bedside table beside Joseph.
“Your father’s note.”
Joseph had long known why Harold called Chloe into the study. His fingertips trembled as he looked at
the envelope that was so close to him.
Chloe took a few steps toward him and gazed down at him. “Should I open it for you?”
“Are you curious?”
“A little. Aren’t you?”
He had been yearning to read this note for more than a decade.
Joseph ignored her question and instead interrogated her in a hoarse voice, “Why did you show me
such a sullen expression at the door of the study earlier?”
