After all the medical staff had left, Jack, dressed in sterile garb, sat beside
Mandy.
He grasped Mandy’s cold hand and reassured her in a deep voice,
“Everything’s over now. I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you this time.”
Unfortunately, Mandy remained unconscious on the bed, unable to respond to
him.
Time flew by, and Jack stayed steadfastly by Mandy’s side, even taking leave
from Joe.
At this point, Charlotte was still missing, but Joe understood Jack’s feelings,
urging him to take good care of Mandy.
After all, Mandy had once saved Charlotte’s life.
The next morning, Mandy’s fingers twitched slightly. Jack, who had been
attentively watching her, became excited and softly said, “Mandy?”
In her current state, Mandy felt as if she was wandering through an empty,
pitch-black void. She had no idea how long she had been walking or how long
it would take to find another soul or destination in this darkness.
All she knew was that she couldn’t remain here. She had to find a way to
break free from this enveloping darkness.
No matter what she tried, Mandy couldn’t dispel the engulfing darkness
before her. She even heard a faint rustling sound, as if some terrifying
creature lurked in the shadows.
Instinctively, Mandy took a step back.
Yet the darkness surrounded her from all sides, leaving no room to escape.
Just as Mandy was racking her brain on how to free herself from this
oppressive blackness, a faint glimmer of light suddenly appeared.
This sliver of light instantly pushed away the surrounding darkness, creating a
small circle of clarity.
Though no one ever mentioned it, Mandy inexplicably felt this beam of light
was her only chance to be alive.
Before she could touch it, the once-diminutive light suddenly burst into
brilliance, illuminating every path around her.
“Where am I?” Mandy’s weak and raspy voice echoed as she finally woke up
from the unconscious.
She slowly opened her eyes and immediately saw Jack, who looked anxious.
She reached out to Jack, who immediately grasped her hand. “You’re finally
awake!”
“How long have I been out?” Mandy asked with a hint of confusion in her
eyes.
Jack paused momentarily with a fleeting sparkle in his eyes as he replied,
“You’ve been unconscious for five days.”
Despite the doctors assuring that her condition was not critical, for some
unknown reason, she couldn’t wake up. Only Jack never gave up, staying by
her side the entire time, waiting for this moment.
“I’m sorry for scaring you,” Mandy said, touching Jack’s face. His features
were etched with visible exhaustion, indicating he hadn’t rested well during
this period.
“As long as you’re okay, I’m not scared of anything,” Jack said, staring
profoundly into Mandy’s eyes.
A flutter went through Mandy’s heart, and she smiled. “Don’t worry, I’ll always
be by your side.”
Jack held her hand, and they looked at each other with deep emotion.
After a while, Mandy suddenly remembered the events before she got shot.
Her face turned anxious as she asked, “Where’s Miss Clinton?”
