Isaac popped open Daniel’s bedroom door. Daniel decked out in dinosaur pajamas and looked
surprised as he asked, “Dad, what are you doing here?”
Gazing at the innocent little face, Isaac was a bit down in the dumps.
“Granny Emily wanted to hit the sack early tonight, so I’m on bath duty.”
Daniel looked puzzled and asked, “Dad, do you even know how to do that?”
Daniel stared at Isaac, unable to picture him giving him a bath.
Isaac shrugged off his coat, rolled up his sleeves, and stood in the bathroom doorway. “Come on in.”
Daniel stepped into the bathroom.
The bathroom was spacious, with anti-slip mats everywhere. One side of the room had a cabinet
loaded with Daniel’s bath supplies and a bunch of tiny toys.
Isaac squatted down and pointed to the tub. “Hop in.”
Daniel quickly stripped off his pajamas and climbed into the tub. His arms were wrapped around a
rubber duck, his eyes sparkling.
Isaac adjusted the water temperature and started to bathe him.
Daniel squinted his eyes, leaning on the edge of the tub, and asked, ‘Dad, are you feeling blue
tonight?”
Isaac paused and then answered, “No, I’m fine.”
“Dad, do you miss Mom? Daniel sensed something was off. Isaac never volunteered for bath duty and
hardly spent time with him.
Isaac stared at his face, and after a silence, he said, ‘She’s with someone else.”
Tonight, Brittany hadn’t even spared him a glance. Her eyes were all for William.
Daniel guessed that he might be feeling down. He pressed his forehead against Isaac’s in comfort and
said, “Dad, don’t be sad. I’ll always be with you.”
Isaac was touched by his words and said, “Okay.”
After the bath, Isaac took Daniel back to his room.
Daniel clambered onto the bed, and sent Brittany a cute voice message. “Mom, Dad gave me a bath
tonight.”
“Mom, why aren’t you replying? Are you sleeping?”
Daniel didn’t receive a reply, but he wasn’t discouraged.
Isaac, who had gotten wet while bathing him, emerged from the bathroom to find Daniel talking to his
watch.
“Who are you chatting with?”
“Mom.”
Daniel pointed at his smartwatch and said, ‘She’s really nice to me.”

Isaac, recalling the “mom” he had found earlier, felt a vein throb in his forehead. “Daniel, don’t just call
anyone Mom, okay?”
-Over the years, he had spent little time with Daniel, overlooking that he was still a kid who needed a
mom.
Daniel pouted and said, “But I like Mommy Bri…”
Mommy Bri smelled nice, and she would buy him ice cream and put him to bed. That was his idea of a
mom.
Isaac didn’t quite catch what he said. He walked to the bed and tucked him in. “Enough with that. Go to
sleep.”
Daniel obediently settled in and sald, “Goodnight, Dad.”
Isaac waited until Daniel was asleep before returning to his room.
He was soaking wet.
He went into his bathroom. After getting out, he called Nathan and asked, “Is Brittany home yet?”
“Not yet.”
Nathan had been waiting downstairs at Brittany’s place. He hadn’t seen her come back.
Isaac’s breath hitched as he asked, “She’s not home?”
“That’s right. I checked, and William is in the hospital, so Ms. Dustin might have stayed there…”
Nathan trod lightly, worried that Isaac would blow his top.
“I see.”
After hanging up, Isaac slammed his fist onto the desk. Wood splinters scattered, and blood seeped
from his knuckles. His eyes were filled with gloom.
