Jericho had transferred her a staggering 500,000.
The sum probably included money for her cousin's dignity's sake. Also, a man of Jericho's status would
feel ashamed if he gave too little.
Madeline thought about it before she eventually transferred 300,000 back to Jericho, while she kept
200,000.
She would feel like a scammer, accepting 500,000 for such an easy job.
But soon, Jericho transferred the 300,000 back to her again and said that the money was no problem
for him as long as she kept what happened a secret.
Hearing that, she immediately assured him that she would keep the secret.
With that, she understood that the 500,000 included hush money.
She could definitely do the money's worth.
And so, she took 350,000 while transferring the rest to Martin.
Although Martin was her most beloved younger brother, she gave him the same commission as other
employees of the firm. After all, nothing could be accomplished without norms or standards.
Instead of accepting the 150,000, Martin gave her a call. "Madeline," he started, "I'm not taking the
money. You should take it as your dowry."
"It's alright. You've already given a lot." Her silly brother bought her a set of sky-high-priced diamond
jewelry at an auction. She had a feeling he had borrowed money from others to do so because he
wouldn't necessarily have enough even if he were to spend all his savings.
"Be good," she coaxed in a gentle voice. "I worry when you don't have money. Just take it."
"But I have money," Martin replied. "I saw Sebastian two days ago, and when I called him my brother-
in-law, he transferred me a lot of money. Pocket money, he said."
When Madeline didn't reply, Martin continued, "I told him I have money, and he didn't have to give me
any. But he insisted it is pocket money he gives his juniors. He told me that I would no longer be his
younger brother if I didn't accept it, so I had no choice but to take the money."
… Is this what it means to be rich and willful? Madeline couldn't help thinking after hearing that.
As though the 150,000 was a hot potato, Martin refused it no matter how she persuaded him. He
stubbornly told her to add the amount to her dowry before he added plausibly, "Madeline, I'm young
and poor now. The only thing I can do is contribute a little to your dowry. By the time I have more
money, you're already married, and I won't be able to give you my part of your dowry anymore. I am
sure I will regret it then. Let me lessen my regret by adding a portion to your dowry now."
She said nothing other than insisting on not taking back the money, but that only made Martin anxious.
Left with no choice, she could only accept it while thinking about saving the money for the time he had
his wedding.
Not only would she save it for him, but she also wanted to add more money she made herself so that
she could buy a lot of real estate for him when he got married. She wanted him to have a grand
wedding and be a financially stable and wealthy man with hundreds of millions that would last a
lifetime!
Nothing else happened after Jericho's matter was settled. Time passed briskly by, and finally, it was
Madeline and Sebastian's wedding day.
At 4:00AM, Madeline was woken up from her sleep by Crystal to have her breakfast.
While she had ravioli that Crystal made, the bridesmaids had sweet oatmeal.
The actual amount of ravioli she ate was based on her age.
It took her more than ten of that thumb-sized pasta for her to feel full.
She couldn't bring herself to have more ravioli in one sitting as she had no appetite from waking up so
early in the morning, but her mother was staring at her from the side. She said that Madeline had to
follow the custom and eat according to her age. No more, no less.
As Madeline reluctantly chewed, she couldn't help sympathizing with women who only got married in
their thirties or forties. Those brides might find it difficult to squeeze into a tighter wedding dress if they
had to eat so much ravioli!
The breakfast for the bridesmaids was also made by Crystal herself. The sticky sweet oatmeal was
filled with dried figs, nuts, blueberries, seeds, and various kinds of grains. There were more than eight
ingredients in total.
And as for Madeline's bridesmaids, they were Leigh, Leah, Caitlin, and her younger cousin from her
father's side, Myla Wendel.
This cousin of hers was from a branch of the Wendel Family. Although her family was only a branch
family, her father and uncle both worked in the system, and their positions were fairly high. And
because Madeline's elder brother and older cousin were also very promising, Madeline's father, uncle,
and the rest of the family had a tight relationship. For that reason, Madeline's parents saved the last
bridesmaid spot for Myla.
Myla was only a twenty-year-old college student this year. She wasn't tall, but she was as gorgeous as
a Barbie doll with her big, glittery eyes, wavy hair, tall nose, and fair skin.
As she was the only daughter in her family, she was rumored to have lived a life with nothing but the
best for her. Despite that, she wasn't spoiled at all. In fact, she was a lovely girl whom everyone liked. It
didn't take long for her to mingle and get along with the rest of the bridesmaids.
The four bridesmaids wore green knee-length skirts made of gauze that was light and elegant.
Three of them were fine as they had worn knee-length skirts with V-necks before, but Leigh, who had
never worn a dress, felt uncomfortable from head to toe.
She only liked to wear simple and comfortable clothes. In her eyes, skirts were uncomfortable and
cumbersome clothes. She had only worn skirts when she was a child and had never touched them
anymore after she grew up.
However, not only was she in a dress today, but the makeup stylist had given her a hairstyle that was
beyond recognition.
For someone who wore her hair short and straight, she had never styled or decorated her hair.
But today, the makeup artist stuck a crystal hairpin in her hair, and even put a flower beside the hairpin!
After taking a good look in the mirror, she asked Madeline, "Who is this dumb-looking broad in the
mirror?"
Madeline laughed so hard she couldn't straighten up as soon as she heard that.
Leah and Caitlin were also smiling when Leigh made a move to tear the flower out of her hair.
"Don't move!" Leah grabbed Leigh's hand in place. "The makeup artist worked so hard to style you up.
You have to respect the fruits of her labor."
"Exactly. You look nice. It won't match the dress if you remove the flower," Caitlin supported.
"I agree," Myla chipped in. "Look, Leigh. Caitlin, Leah, and I all have a flower on our heads. It'll look
weird if you're the odd one out."
Madeline smiled. "That is that. You look pretty! Really!"
Hearing that, Leigh looked at the mirror again. "Geez, this sure feels awkward," she muttered.
"You'll get used to it," Madeline replied.
Leigh poked her in her temple. "Why do I have to sacrifice so much when you're the one getting
married?" she huffed.
"Nonsense. This isn't a sacrifice." Madeline smilingly leaned in and whispered, "Lucas is one of the
groomsmen! Imagine how he will react when he sees you in this getup."
Leigh only peered at her as she combed out her hair which she messed up a little from all her grabbing.
"I think, he will like me no matter what I look like."
"... I just don't understand how you grew up to be so thick-skinned when you eat the same thing as
everyone else."
