He was chilling on the couch, firing up his laptop with one hand. There was some drama going on at
the overseas company that needed him to fly out
and sort it all out.
He was jetting off in the next couple of days, but he had to pull an all–nighter to get all the paperwork
for the Raymond Corporation wrapped up.
Carlene was feeling all kinds of awkward about asking for help, especially since she’d been running her
mouth about the Pennyfeather family being all talk and no action that very morning.
She felt like a total fool and started to wonder if all of this was a trap set by Maja.
If that was the case, then she was indeed a big, fat dummy.
While she was busy showing off to Maja, Maja must have been laughing her head off at how gullible
she was,
Thinking about it, Carlene felt like she was about to lose it.
She was actually fooled by a nobody!
How embarrassing!
Even more embarrassing than that one night!
Tears started to fall from her eyes. She had no mood to stir up trouble anymore; she just wanted to get
this debt fixed ASAP.
“lan, could you maybe ask Samuel to do me a solid? I’m sure he’d be down to help if you asked him.
This is really important to me.”
She was crying her eyes out, and it was heartbreaking.
lan wondered why she was suddenly asking for Samuel’s help when they didn’t interact much.
But he didn’t have time to dwell on it because Jeff walked in, announcing that the overseas meeting
was about to start.
He had a big conference to attend overseas next; he had his hands full..
So he dialed Samuel right away.
Seeing the call from lan, Samuel was a bit taken aback. Was lan really going to help Carlene?
He glanced at Maja, who was sitting across from him.
Maja must have guessed who was on the other end of the line. She didn’t say anything; she was just
gazing out the window with a blank look on her face. They were still at the restaurant, and she had to
speed things up since she was about to team up with Samuel.
The corners of Samuel’s mouth lifted slightly as he picked up the call, then deliberately switched to
speakerphone, placing the phone on the table.
“Well, well, Mr. Raymond has time to make calls now, does he?”
His tone was teasing, like he was looking for some entertainment.
lan glanced at his watch.
“You should know. It’s about Carlene.”
Samuel looked at Maja again.
Maja sipped her juice calmly, her face expressionless.
Taking the opportunity, Samuel shouted out, “Penny, are you going to finish this?
He pushed a plate of dessert toward her.
lan figured Samuel would agree to help. Samuel was a smart guy.
But hearing Samuel call out that name, he froze, and his breathing seemed to stop.
He even thought he’d heard wrong.
But a cold female voice came through the phone: “No, too sweet.”
Though it was just one sentence, he detected a hint of coyness.
Rage burned in his chest.
Soon, Samuel responded.
“Since you took the time to call, don’t worry; I won’t give Ms. Shepard a hard time.”
After saying that, he waited for lan to hang up.
But lan didn’t.
A minute of silence.
Samuel chuckled lightly, “Mr. Raymond, anything else?”
“Click!”
The call abruptly ended.
Samuel took back his phone, then made a comment.
Mr. Raymond has never called me before.”
His words implied that he was ready to do everything for Carlene.
Maja found this amusing: “Mr. Brown is reminding me not to get too cocky, not to think that I can
replace Carlene, right?”
Samuel’s eyes became complex.
“As long as you understand, if you have feelings for him, there’s bound to be a big problem in the
future.”
Maja’s hand clenched the stem of her glass, then she regained her composure.
“I won’t let myself get into that mess.”
“Penny, what’s up next?”
