Maja had no idea how she made it through the night.
She lay on her bed, tears streaming down her face, soaking her pillow, and her body shaking non–stop.
She gripped the bed sheet tightly, her lips clamped shut, no sobs escaping.
Maria knocked on the door.
“Ms. Pennyfeather, I’ve made you some soup; you should have a bite.”
Maria had no idea what had happened; she just noticed that Maja’s complexion seemed off lately, like
she was sleep–deprived.
Still laying on the bed, grinding her teeth, Maja pulled herself together upon hearing Maria’s voice.
“I’m not hungry.”
Assuming Maja was in a bad mood, Maria sighed, “I’ll keep the soup warm; you can help yourself in the
kitchen if you want.”
“Fine.”
Maja’s throat ached. She lay there a while longer; the letter and the ring crossed her mind again.
Gently, she opened the box, reading the letter and crying.
The letter was soaked with tears in her hands, but she couldn’t care less; her tears wouldn’t stop
flowing-
Crying herself out, she drifted into sleep..
At midnight, she woke with a sudden stomachache and ended up throwing up.
With her stomach causing her great pain, she shook out alstomach pill, chewed it, and then took
melatonin before crawling back into bed.
Half asleep/her phone rang–a call from Carol Miller.
Carol was also at the hospital when Felix Brown’s cousin’s condition suddenly worsened, but she
refused surgery.
Every ‘surgery carried risks, particularly brain surgery, which was the riskiest of all.
She was afraid the operation would fail.
Although she was revived tonight, her mood was down.
Carol brought a bouquet of flowers to visit her and found out her name was Listina.
A beautiful name, and Listina herself was a beauty as well.
Carol, healthy and beautiful, was like a gem in the world. Seeing such a frail girl, she felt deep
sympathy.

Carol and Felix had just arrived at the hospital, and Felix was asking the doctor when the surgery could
be performed.
The doctor was helpless. “We need the patient’s consent.”
“I’ll talk to her.” He paused. “I’m her cousin, her only relative now; her parents are gone.”
“But it’s up to her; there are many procedures before surgery, and we need her to be emotionally
stable.”
“I’ll persuade her.”
At this moment, Carol quietly called Maja and instructed, “I told Felix that I could get an international
specialist because of you. Don’t mess up, Maja, got
it?”
Maja, her head spinning from crying, quickly responded, “Mm–hmm.”
Carol frowned. “Your voice is hoarse; are you coming down with a cold?”
“No.”
“Then what’s wrong? If you’re not feeling well, I’ll come over right away.”
Maja was silent for half a minute, then whispered, “I just miss my mom.”
For some reason, Carol suddenly felt a pang in her heart.
She knew Maja’s family situation well; Maja had always been an independent person. From a young
age, she started doing business with Neil, always
behaved well, and never threw tantrums.
Back then, a group of middle–aged men would joke around and tell harmless jokes, and Maja would
just sit quietly on the side, as if someone had hit the pause button on her.
Carol had known Maja for a long time; they used to bump into each other at restaurants. Later, they
became friends during university, but Carol didn’t study art because she was going to take over the
Miller family business.
Hearing Maja say this, Carol felt a pang of sympathy.
“Maybe I could keep you company; maybe Aunt Lillian is missing you.”
Maja’s tears started rolling down again, but she held back her trembling voice.
“No need; I was just saying. I just got back from Crystalbrook Valley, Carol. You go on with your work.”
But Carol couldn’t let it go: “If you’re having trouble with anything, remember to tell me.”
“Alright.”
Maja hung up the phone and laid on the pillow.
She had been in this position for too long; her neck started to hurt.
But she didn’t want to change positions.
She held on to a corner of the blanket tightly, as if it warmed her heart a bit, then fell asleep again.
