Marcus suddenly whipped his head around, a fierce glare piercing Into Ben, “Ben, why are you so
cocky?”
His voice was chilling to the bone, sending shivers down Ben’s spine, leaving his mind a jumbled mess.
“President Hartley, didn’t you say that confidence is key for being
your assistant?”
Marcus eyed him coldly, “I told you to be confident, not overconfident. I’m curious, why do you keep
thinking Cornelia has a thing for you?”
Marcus had a keen sense for these things, so sharp that he still remembered a similar remark from Ben
months ago.
Ben felt a chill run down his spine under Marcus‘ gaze, stuttering in his explanation, “There were only
the three of us in the elevator Cornelia wasn’t sick or anything, but her face was all flushed. There must
be a reason. She can’t be into you, so she must be into me”
“Into you? What’s so special about you that Cornelia would fall for you? Marcus felt that Bens
assumption was an insult to both him and Cornelia, The Antarctica division is short staffed, report there
immediately”
Ben thought he must have heard wrong, “President Hartley, you’re sending me to work in Antarctica?”
Marcus asked, “Is there a problem?”
The news hit Ben like a bolt out of the blue. “President Hartley, you’re really sending me to Antarctica?
Did I screw up at work? Please, don’t make me go there. It’s so cold”
Marcus looked at the crying Ben coldly, without saying a word Marcus possessiveness was getting a
little out of hand; it wasn’t right to relocate a long–serving employee over a comment. Cornelia didn’t
want to get a tongue–lashing over this.
She quickly chimed in “President Hartley, he didn’t mean any harm. He might just be a bit careless.
After all, he’s never been in a relationship, he’s not even considered it Don’t hold it against him.”
Ben was still clueless about what he did to upset his boss, “What does my relationship status have to
do with me going to Antarctica
Cornelia hastily hushed him, “Shut up.”
She turned to Marcus, a pleasing smile on her face, “President Hartley, he’s been with you for years.
Please don’t act on impulse.”
Marcus said, “You tell him.”
Marcus was vague, but Cornelia caught his drift. This man was so childish!
With no other choice, she had to tell Ben. “I’m married, you know that, right?”
Ben said, “Yes”
Cornelia glanced at Marcus, then continued. “My husband and I are very much in love, and we’ve
decided to spend our lives together. My feelings for you are purely professional. I hope you won’t
misunderstand me in the future. Otherwise, my husband won’t be pleased, and you’ll be the one to pay
the price”
Ben retorted, “Who’s your husband? How powerful is he? I have to pay the price if he’s not happy?”
Cornelia responded, “You better shut up. I won’t be responsible for the consequences.” She stole
another glance at Marcus, but found his face devoid of any expression.
Ben continued, “You still haven’t explained clearly”
Cornelia remained silent.
The elevator doors opened, interrupting their conversation.
Marcus was the first to exit, and Cornelia followed him to his office. “Have you decided to keep Ben?”
Marcus looked at her, asking seriously, “Why are you so insistent on keeping Ben?”
Cornelia was at a loss for words. “Because…” His gaze was intense, borderline aggressive, leaving her
tongue–tied, “You want to be a tyrant, but I don’t want to be the woman who lets you make foolish
decisions.”
Throughout history, when men messed up, women were often left to pick up the pieces.
