Outside the office door, Cornelia could hear the commotion inside.
First up was a staff from the management office. We already checked the surveillance footage of the
three exits. Your kid didn’t leave the community. He must be somewhere around. We’ll help find him
immediately”
A woman chimed in, her voice choked with tears, “Can you send more people to help find him? If
anything happened to my son, I wouldn’t be able to live”
Before the woman could finish, she was cut off sternly by a man, “You’re all frantic now, but what were
you doing earlier? Our kid is still so little, how could you leave him alone at home?”
The woman, already on the verge of tears, felt even more quilty after the man’s rebuke. She sobbed
and said, “He fell asleep and then I went downstairs to buy sanitary pads I came back right after buying
them. I didn’t dilly–dally. But when I came back, he was gone from the bed. Usually, he sleeps for
several hours at a stretch I had no idea
The man snapped. You keep saying you had no idea. Do you have any useful information at all?”
The staff, fearing the man might lash out physically at the woman, hastily stepped in, “Sir, your wife
surely didn’t intend for this to happen. Let’s not lose our heads Finding the kid is the priority.”
The woman was visibly shaken and heartbroken, but she dared not sob out loud.
“Mama” The little boy heard his mother’s voice, slid off from Marcus and ran towards her.
“My son.” Hearing the familiar voice, the woman’s eyes lit up. She opened her arms to embrace her
child, but he was stopped by a sudden pair of arms.
The man held the little boy tight, kissed his face, “You scared the living daylights out of me! I thought
you were taken by some bad guys.”
The little boy struggled hard, “I want mom. I want mom!”
The man’s face turned cold, “Your mom almost lost you. Why are you still looking for her? Tonight,
you’re coming to grandma’s with me.”
The woman asked, “What did you say?”
The man replied, “I said I’m taking our son to his grandma’s”
Hearing that he was taking the child away, the woman’s emotions crumbled. She stepped forward,
covered the little boy’s ears, and yelled at the man, “Did I give birth to this child alone? Why do I have
to shoulder all the blame when he’s lost?”
The man retorted angrily, “You’re not working, just staying home looking after our kid, and you still
managed to lose him. Isn’t it your responsibility? I’m just lucky that my son came back safely. If he had
been hurt in any way, I would never forgive you in my life.”
His words instantly doused the woman’s anger.
She suddenly laughed, murmuring. “You think I enjoy staying at home and not working? When I was
pregnant, I had severe morning sickness but I kept working until a few days before I gave birth.
“After my maternity leave, I planned to hire a nanny and return to work. But you didn’t agree, you said
your salary was enough to support me and our child. You insisted that I stay home and take care of our
child personally. But now you criticize me for not working, complaining about how hard it is for you to
earn money outside. Do you think it’s easy to take care of a child alone at home?
“Johnny’s almost four now. In these four years, I’ve never had a proper rest. When he wakes up in the
middle of the night, I have to wake up. When he gets hungry at night, I have to feed him. When he’s a
bit older and doesn’t need night feeds, but needs to use the loo in the middle of the night, I have to be
there
“I’m happy to take care of the child I gave birth to. But I also have to take care of you. Even when
Johnny’s sick and I’ve been busy taking him to the hospital all day, when I get home, and I don’t have
time to cook, you still question why there’s no dinner waiting for you. I tell you I took Johnny to the
hospital, but you blame me for not taking good care of him, making him sick. I want to ask you, which
kid doesn’t get sick?”
“You’re impossible to communicate with! You’re in no state to take care of our child right now. I’m
sending him to my mother’s so she can help look after him for a few days You need to stay home and
do some serious self–reflection. After a while, based on your actions, I’ll decide whether you can
continue to care for our child” The man, oblivious of his own mistakes, blamed the woman, and was set
on leaving with the child.
