Since Cornelia got knocked up, Jeremy had been hitting the books hard to learn all about pregnancy.
He knew that if her water broke with less amniotic fluid, or if she was not having regular contractions, it
could mean the baby was in distress. This would call for a C–section to nip the pregnancy in the bud
and avoid endangering the baby’s health and life.
After the water broke, complications like premature rupture of membranes or prolapsed umbilical cord
might occur. These were risky situations that would also require a C–section.
On top of that, Cornelia had been eating like a horse during her pregnancy, causing the baby’s
development to go off the charts. With Cornelia being a petite woman and not exactly built for
childbirth, a C–section was also necessary.
Thinking about Cornelia’s safety, Jeremy made the call on the spot for the hospital to prep for surgery
and get the C–section underway ASAP. The doc said they were good to go.
The hospital was just a stone’s throw away, and in no time at all, Cornelia was smoothly wheeled into
the operating room.
Although family members were usually barred from, the OR, given Cornelia’s jitters and Jeremy’s
unease about letting her go in there alone, he also suited up and accompanied her into the room.
During the operation, Jeremy held on to Cornelia’s hand like a lifeline. Even though she was knocked
out by the anesthesia, he kept whispering in her ear.
He told her he was right there with her and that there was nothing to be scared of.
About half an hour later, the sound of a baby’s cry filled the room, signaling that the baby Cornelia had
been waiting for had finally arrived.
The doctor walked over to Jeremy with the baby, “Mr. Artis, congratulations, it’s a boy!”
Jeremy barely glanced at the baby, didn’t even get a good look at his face, before he turned his
attention back to Cornelia.
“When will Cornelia wake up?” He asked.
“After we’ve stitched up her wound and taken her to her room, she’ll wake up naturally once the
anesthesia wears off.” The doctor replied. Jeremy pressed on, “Is there any risk?”
“Mr. Artis, Cornelia is in excellent health and the surgery went very well. Under normal circumstances,
there should be no danger.” The doctor said. Jeremy persisted, “And under abnormal circumstances?”
The doctor explained, “Unless she gets an infection or severe bleeding, but the chances of that
happening are slim to none.”
Jeremy, not wanting to take any chances, interrupted the doctor, “Is there any way to guarantee her
safety 100%?*
The doctor tried to reassure him, “Mr. Artis, Cornelia should be fine. You really don’t need to worry so
much.”
“I need a 100% guarantee.” Jeremy insisted.
The doctor, knowing that no surgery could guarantee 100% safety, tried to calm Jeremy down by
saying, “Mr. Artis, we’ve arranged for Cornelia to be in a sterile room, and all our medical equipment
and medication are top–notch. She will be perfectly safe.”
Hearing this, Jeremy felt a bit more at ease, “Yes, only the best equipment and techniques should be
used. Thank you all for working hard through the night for Cornelia’s safety. As long as Cornelia is safe,
I’m willing to give each of you a bonus, and even buy the most advanced equipment for your hospital.”
The doctor replied, “Rest assured, we’ve made the best possible arrangements.”
Although the doctor wasn’t sure of Jeremy’s background, he knew that he was generous, even inviting
top domestic and international obstetrics experts that their hospital couldn’t normally afford.
With a high–roller like that, they couldn’t afford to drop the ball. Tonight, even the hospital director was
taking charge personally.
