‘I’ve always been on my own, Cornelia took a step back, creating a gap between her and Marcus
Marcus, I’ve got something to spill.”
“Shool, I’m all ears. Marcus‘ voice was still smooth and pleasant, but it didn’t have its usual deep and
powerful tone
Cornelia noticed something odd about his breath, it seemed a bit ragged But he looked okay, so she
didn’t think much of it. “If you ever fall for some other women in the future, make sure you give your
current girlfriend a heads–up. That cold attitude of yours, it’s really gut–wrenching”
Marcus took a pause before he responded, “I’m sorry”
Cornelia didn’t expect an apology from him. His apology meant he knew he messed up, yet he still
went ahead with it. This meant he no longer considered her feelings when making decisions
“It’s water under the bridge. What’s the use of saying sorry now? Cornella smiled.
“I know sorry doesn’t cut it.” Marcus was cut off by a sudden coughing fit.
Cornelia instinctively wanted to help him, but she held herself back. ‘Need me to call a doc?”
Cornelia hoped Marcus would take care of himself, but then she reminded herself that they were no
longer together it was someone else’s job to worry about his health, she didn’t have to butt in
Luckily, Marcus‘ coughing fit stopped just after a few coughs. “Let me walk you home, okay?”
“No need” Cornelia smiled and took out a fancy box from her bag “Here’s your necklace back.”
Marcus‘ gaze dropped to the box she was offering, but he didn’t take it. The necklace is already yours.”
“It was never mine to begin with, it was meant for your wife, and I’m no longer your wife. It’s too much. I
don’t want it. I don’t want to be reminded of my failed marriage every time I see it”
“A necklace is an accessory, it’s not meant to be taken back once given. It’s yours, you can do
whatever you want with it.
“Well then, I’ll just get rid of it.” Cornelia lifted her hand and threw the box on the ground, then she
laughed. “Are you okay with the way I handled it?”
The box broke apart, the necklace inside snapped, the gems and embellishments scattered, beyond
repair. Cornelia looked at the mess and suddenly laughed out. “Marcus, you have no idea how hard I
worked to keep a straight face talking to you. You also have no clue how much I wanted to rip your
mask off. So, Marcus, let’s not see each other again, okay?”
Marcus felt a sharp pain in his chest, almost coughed up blood, but he managed to control it.
Cornelia gave him a smile, then turned and walked away.
‘Cornelia‘
Marcus called out her name again. But this time, Cornelia didn’t stop, neither did she turn around. She
just walked away. Before long, she disappeared from his sight, as if she had completely vanished from
his world.
Marcus suddenly lost his balance, but thankfully, Jayden appeared just in time to support him.
“President Hartley-”
Marcus took a deep breath, stood up straight again, watching Cornelia’s fading figure.
When Cornelia proposed the divorce, she was eerily calm, almost inhumanly so. She left the Hartley
family, left him, all with a level head. When they met again, she was still composed, not a hint of
emotional turmoil.
Marcus knew all too well, the more a person suppressed their emotions, the more likely they were to
have an internal crisis. This was the only emotional outburst from Cornelia since she had brought up
the divorce.
