“Are you feeling unwell? Do you need a doctor?” Cornelia asked.
Hannah shook her head, “I just don’t want to be with that guy”
“What’s the matter between you and President Dixon?” Cornelia asked.
“What could possibly be the matter? Hannah retorted, “Our marriage was a transaction from the get–
go. He never truly considered me his wife. To him, I’m like his plaything, to be summoned when he
needs me and discarded when he doesn’t.”
“You can’t think like that. You two are legally wedded, you are equals. Cornelia tried to reason with her.
Hannah let out a soft laugh, “Equals? Cornelia, do you really think I can talk about equality with guys
like Steven, without sounding naive?”
Perhaps she had been too sheltered by Marcus, oblivious to the harsh realities of the world outside.
Talking about equality with the men in this room was only possible if they were willing to treat them as
equals. Otherwise, it was all just empty talk.
“Why not? He’s your husband.” Cornelia said.
“If he doesn’t respect me, doesn’t allow me my own rights, then I don’t need such a marriage.” Hannah
scoffed, “Cornelia, look at those four men over there. If they don’t agree to a divorce, who among us
can get a divorce? Skyler is the perfect example. She left everything behind to escape Zavier, and
nearly lost her life in the process.
Cornelia was left speechless.
“Our circumstances are different. The people we face are different, and our understanding of marriage
is different.” Hannah continued.
Upon hearing this, Cornelia felt a pang of sadness. She couldn’t comprehend Hannah’s predicament,
which led her to believe Hannah’s thinking was flawed, “I’m sorry.”
Why are you apologizing? If you still think this way, it means President Hartley truly cares for you. You
should cherish him.” Hannah said.
Cornelia nodded, “I will.”
Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of a broken wine glass. The three of them turned
towards the direction of the sound, only to see Zavier smashing another wine glass against the wall,
like a madman.
The root of it all could be traced back to a few minutes ago.
After the men had moved to the inner room, Steven seemed distracted, frequently glancing towards
Hannah.
Lucas teased him, “Steven, can’t bear to be away from your wife? Can’t handle being a few feet away
from her?”
Steven turned his gaze away, “What were you guys just talking about?”
“We were talking about Zavier. Since he can’t find Skyler and can’t stay single forever, we suggested
he heed his father’s advice and remarry.” Lucas said.
Steven said, “Zavier’s feelings for Skyler run deep. He definitely won’t remarry in the near future. But if
more time passes, who knows?”
Zavier finished his drink in one gulp, placing the glass in front of Marcus, “Marc, how about we make a
bet?”
Marcus gently pushed up his silver–rimmed glasses, calmly replying, “I don’t gamble!”
