Remembering the prescription he had eagerly given to Zach filled Kai with guilt. ‘My action led to Alicia
losing her only daughter.’
A past promise he made as a child now weighed heavily on his mind. At eight, standing next to the
radiant Alicia and looking at a starry sky, he had said, “If you ever have a daughter, Ms. Wood, I’ll look
out for her like a big brother.”
Alicia smiled warmly. “I can see you being a wonderful big brother. And if I’m not around, she had
added, her tone more serious, “promise me you’ll take care of her.”
Kai, even as a young boy, had taken the promise to heart. “I promise.”
Yet, thinking of it now, he felt a pang of sorrow. ‘I was supposed to protect her. If Madelyn dies, I’m to
blame.’
Lana waited outside the operating room, watching as Kai, dressed in blue scrubs, went inside. She was
not used to seeing him so serious; his usual self was so playful.
After a short nap, Madelyn came down to the living room, feeling hungry. “Margaret, did someone stop
by? I could’ve sworn I heard voices.”
“Ms. Jent, that was not Margaret you heard. Don’t you recall? She’s on a break and won’t return until
later in the week.”
“Oh, right.” Concern washed over Madelyn. Lately, she had been forgetting things more and
more.
After lunch, the maid got a call from Zach. “She’s upstairs with the baby. She had some
questions earlier but seemed okay.” She filled him in and hung up hurriedly to avoid rousing Madelyn’s
suspicion.
About the plane crash near Ventropolis, Zach made sure it stayed out of the headlines; no newspapers
covered the story. Once he finished downstairs, Zach headed to the bedroom. Inside, he found
Madelyn asleep, the baby nestled beside her. Feeling the bed shift, Madelyn sensed Zach’s presence.
A gentle arm rested on her, bringing with it a hint of cold-clearly, he had been outside.
“I just put on this sleeping gown. Make sure you don’t get it dirty,” Madelyn said.
Zach gently pulled her close. “You look tired. Get some more sleep.”
He gently touched Madelyn’s waist. He was in high spirits today, having bought gifts for her and the
baby. Zach had initially planned to settle in Paris, but after talking with Madelyn, he changed his mind
about leaving so soon.
Madelyn felt uneasy, and Zach’s return did not help. “You’re holding me too tight,” she said, gasping
slightly.
Zach relaxed his grip a bit. ‘I’m thinking of hosting a big party at Supreme World for our child.
Hearing this, Madelyn responded quickly, gently pushing his hand away. “Why do you always act
without thinking? If someone asks about us and about the child, what am I supposed to say? I’m not
your wife, Zach. This whole situation is just pretend.”
She could not understand why he was so into this fake relationship.
