The heavy silence in the living room was finally broken by Kieran after a few minutes.
He instructed calmly, “Treyton, put up a bounty on the dark web and see if you can get evidence of
Charles being the illegitimate son of the royal family. Leave the rest to the legal team. I’ll have them
draft up the document as soon as possible. Kiddo, just do as the lawyer says by then.”
Jennifer, who had been listening to him solemnly, said, “His identity as the illegitimate son has been
kept under wraps for so many years. Evidently, the royal family is capable of preventing the spread of
information. I doubt the dark web will have evidence of this.”
She did not call him by his name, for she could not bring herself to call him. Yet, at the same time, she
could not deny the fact that Charles was her brother.
Treyton turned to her. “You have an idea?”
Jennifer nodded. “I might be able to find evidence.”
Craig had wanted her to move back to the Newton residence, and that would be the perfect chance for
her to look for evidence.
Even though her father had passed away, his study and bedroom were still in the house, and
apparently, Craig had made sure that the room was kept clean and untouched. Perhaps she would be
able to find something there.
Treyton was not too keen on the idea. As he looked at her worriedly, he said, “You were just taken back
in by the Newton family, so it’s too risky for you to do this. Charles is your half-brother whom you share
a father with. Even if he’s an illegitimate son, he’s still one of the Newtons. If Craig finds out about this,
he won’t let you off.”
“That won’t happen. Craig is the nicest to me among the Newtons. He always says that he needs to
make up for the twenty and more years. Even if he finds out about this, he won’t do anything to me.
Don’t worry.”
Time was running out; they only had three days. Jennifer was quick to act. That afternoon, she told
Craig that she wanted to move back into the Newton residence.
Craig was delighted to have her embrace her new identity so quickly and join the Newton family.
That night, Treyton helped Jennifer pack her luggage before sending her to the Newton residence.
Jennifer had inquired around the house a little. Besides the housekeepers, only a few Newtons were
around. Like her father, her eldest brother had passed away, and her third brother had business
overseas and rarely came home.
In other words, her mother and her unmarried sister Jasmine were the only ones at home. Even Craig
only returned once in a blue moon.
In no time, Jennifer found out from the butler that Craig had to work in the Federal Bureau of
Investigation and was unlikely to return for the next two nights.
Not wanting to miss the golden opportunity, Jennifer promptly familiarized herself with the villa as the
butler guided her around.
“Ms. Jennifer, the sixth floor is a restricted area, and you mustn’t go there at night. Other than this area,
feel free to go anywhere in the villa during the day.”
Jennifer was confused. “Didn’t you say that the sixth floor is where my mother stays and where my
father’s study and bedroom are located? If that’s the case, why can’t I go there at night?”
A troubled look crossed the butler’s face, and he lowered his head. “This is Mr. Craig’s order. You just
came back to the family, so you don’t understand many things about the Newton family. In the future,
Mr. Craig will be the one to explain them to you. All you need to do is to heed his order.”
Jennifer stared at the butler for a long while.
It seemed that there was more to the Newton family than what she currently knew and what Craig had
told her previously.
With a slight bow, the butler gestured toward a room. “This is your room. Please get some rest.”
“Okay.”
After closing the door behind her, Jennifer went to sit on the bed to collect her thoughts.
Why can’t I go to the sixth floor at night even though I’m permitted there during the day? It feels like
they have a secret. The more restricted the place, the more curious I am.
The villa was silent at three in the morning as the people were all in deep slumber.
Jennifer tiptoed out of her room and went upstairs to the highest floor.
Alas, the gate to the sixth floor was locked.
She could only see the dark corridor through the iron gate.
The wintry midnight breeze blew and brought a shiver to her body. It made the creepy sixth floor even
more mysterious.
Jennifer reluctantly went back down the stairs. She guessed that Craig had the keys, but the butler
probably had a copy as well.
She had two ways to go about this. One was to find a method to get the keys, and the other was to do
something risky.
With those thoughts in mind, Jennifer turned around to enter her room before opening the window and
climbing out of it.
Jennifer grew up in an orphanage, and she had been through tough times. She could do anything, from
climbing trees to catching fish with her bare hands. She had more strength than the average girl.
It was easy for her to climb up the pipe from the fourth floor to the sixth floor.
Even though the window on the sixth floor was closed, it was fortunately unlocked, so she managed to
get inside.
To not wake her sleeping mother, Jennifer did not turn on the lights. Instead, she used the torch on her
phone.
Upon surveying the room, she realized it was a study.
Why, this is easier than I expected.
She quickly scoured through the room, but alas, she could find nothing about Charles.
Jennifer’s gaze landed on the book racks.
She once heard from Craig that her father had brought back Charles after one trip to Erihal, and he
was determined to make his illegitimate son legitimate. She guessed that he must have loved the
princess dearly.
She returned her focus to the books and raked her gaze across them before stopping at an Epean
book.
Even though she knew little Epean, she could still understand simple words. She promptly realized that
there was a word that meant love in the title.
She stood on tiptoes, took the Epean book, and flipped through the pages.
There was a photo of a man and a woman placed between the pages. The two were hugging each
other intimately, and the woman’s exotic blue eyes were outstanding. She was beautiful.
Without hesitation, Jennifer shoved the photo into her pocket before switching off her phone torch.
Right as she was about to climb back out the window, she heard the sounds of shuffling footsteps
behind her. It was soft, but she was in a quiet environment, so she heard it immediately.
She spun around.
Despite the dim moonlight, she saw the bloodshot eyes of the other person and the ferocious look on
their face.
She was frightened out of her wits, but before she could run off, the other person struck her head with
an ashtray.
While feeling dizzy, she felt someone strangling her and screaming at her face.
“Why are you alive? Why did you come back? You’re the symbol of humiliation! You shouldn’t be alive
in this world! You should die!”
Jennifer passed out as the flurry of insults rushed into her ears.
By the time Jennifer woke again, she had a soft blanket on her, and she was lying on a bed.
Despite the raging headache, she moved to sit upright. When she reached out to touch her head, she
realized there was a gauze wrapped around it.
As she swallowed a lump in her throat, she realized her neck ached too.
“You’re awake. Does it still hurt?”
Craig was seated beside her with a mild look on his face.
“Didn’t the butler tell you that you weren’t allowed to go upstairs at night? Why didn’t you listen to me?
You even scaled the wall to get in. You’re too bold for your own good.”
Jennifer finally recollected her thoughts as realization dawned on her. Promptly, she touched her
pocket.
