If I Lie
Gwendolyn turned around upon hearing the voice and saw it was Sheralyn.
It was such a coincidence for them to stumble into each other at a hotel.
Sheralyn grasped Gwendolyn’s wrist with both hands and gazed at her with eyes filled with admiration
and joy. Her past arrogance before she learned of Gwendolyn’s identity had vanished without a trace.
“Gwendolyn, it’s been over a year since we last met. I saw online that you had twins with Mr. Jenson.
Congratulations. I’m so envious that you can still maintain such a stunning figure even after having
kids.”
Gwendolyn responded with a courteous smile, patted Sheralyn’s shoulder, and explained, “My brother,
Kieran, and Inez from the Mossey family are getting married soon, so I came here to prepare the
arrangements for the wedding ceremony.” She paused and turned to glance at Cedrick. “I thought I
would also take this opportunity to visit you and Mrs. Wright.”
Sheralyn was taken aback. Hearing how Gwendolyn addressed Frida, she felt a hint of melancholy and
suddenly remembered her brother and Gwendolyn’s ex-husband, Maverick, who had passed away.
“Congratulations on your new life, Gwendolyn. I heard that you and Mr. Jenson have a very good
relationship.”
Gwendolyn shot another quick look at Cedrick and chirped, “Indeed.”
Keeping up his cold and aloof demeanor, Cedrick stood behind in silence, not initiating conversation
with members of the Mossey family despite being in their presence.
Madelyn and her family didn’t know that Cedrick used to be Maverick previously. She found the
situation unsettling now that Gwendolyn’s current husband had met with her ex-husband’s younger
sister.
Fearing Gwendolyn would feel awkward and Cedrick might be jealous, Madelyn took the initiative to
smooth things over. “It’s getting late now. Are you here for a business meeting, Ms. Wright?”
Sheralyn nodded. “Yes. Wright Construction Group is looking to seal the deal on a new collaboration.”
“In that case, we won’t occupy more of your time, Ms. Wright. I still have some details about the
wedding ceremony to discuss with Ms. Harris, so we’ll be taking our leave first.”
Sheralyn let go of Gwendolyn’s wrist. “Okay. I’ll let you get back to your conversation.”
Perhaps Gwendolyn’s strict discipline before that had left a deep impression on Sheralyn. She behaved
well in front of Gwendolyn, not daring to act even a little haughtily.
Before leaving, she stole a glance at the man behind Gwendolyn. He’s so handsome and gives off
such an oppressive and overwhelming aura. Is this Chanaea’s famous Mr. Jenson?
Sheralyn couldn’t help but take a few more looks at Cedrick. For some reason, she was unable to
shake off the feeling that he resembled her brother, who had been dead for over a year.
However, she quickly dismissed that thought. The Wright family is incomparable to the renowned
Jenson family from Salinsburgh, Chanaea. It must be my imagination.
Sheralyn lowered her head, not daring to look at Cedrick anymore as she walked past Gwendolyn and
the others to leave.
Gwendolyn suppressed her amusement after taking in Sheralyn’s reaction when she saw Cedrick.
After exiting the hotel and bidding farewell to Jerome, his family, and Kieran, Gwendolyn and Cedrick
got into the car to return to the hotel to get some rest. Gwendolyn said, “Did you see the surprised and
incredulous look on your sister’s face earlier? What do you think she was thinking? Will she think I can’t
get over her brother, so I deliberately found a man who looks like him?”
Cedrick drawled expressionlessly, “I did. I thought she would recognize me right away, so I was
wondering how to brush it off in front of the Mosseys. However, she left without saying anything. I
overthought it, I guess. I assumed she would recognize me just by looking at my physique like you did
even when I wore a mask.” He couldn’t help but shake his head. He then domineeringly wrapped his
arms around Gwendolyn’s slender waist. “It looks like they’re living quite comfortably. I lived in the
Wright residence for over ten years, yet she failed to recognize me after I was gone for just over a year.
Only my darling treats me the best and cares about me the most.”
Gwendolyn contained her urge to laugh. “If Frida were to know the fake son she had cherished for over
ten years is actually the eldest grandson of the Jenson family and the person in charge of the Federal
Bureau of Investigation, I suppose her reaction would be bigger than Sheralyn, right?”
Cedrick pondered briefly and leaned in to kiss her tender cheek. “Perhaps. Maybe we’ll know how
they’ll
react tomorrow.
Gwendolyn rested her head on his broad shoulder, gazing out the window at the receding street lights.
Deep emotions crept into her heart as she recalled events from a year ago, but she didn’t say anything.
The next day, Cedrick woke up exceptionally early. Perhaps it was because Gwendolyn was going to
accompany him to visit the Wrights that day, he hardly slept throughout the night. He wasn’t sure
whether his insomnia was due to excitement or restlessness.
After changing into a suit, he sat on the edge of the hotel bed, looking out at the skyscrapers, lost in
thought.
Gwendolyn woke up to that sight.
Cedrick sat upright with his back turned to her, exuding an air of solemnity. Even when he was in a
daze, he still appeared absurdly elegant. His attractiveness was palpable just by looking at the back of
his head.
She gently slid her slender fingers under his dark suit jacket from behind, hooked them around his belt,
and tugged softly. “What are you thinking about, waking up early in the morning and staring blankly out
the window? Is something troubling you?”
Cedrick hummed in response. He bent down, cupped her cheeks with both hands, and kissed her soft
lips
twice.
Then, seemingly discontent, he smooched her forehead, chin, eyes, and other parts of her face, not
sparing an inch of her face.
Gwendolyn was overwhelmed by his fervent kisses, only managing to catch her breath again when she
pressed a hand against his face.
“What are you doing, suddenly behaving so passionately and brazenly? I’m not used to this. It’s as if
we’re about to part.”
Cedrick held her tight in his arms, nuzzling her neck. “That will never happen. It’s just that I was
reminded of our first meeting in Salinsburgh, where you managed to recognize me even when I wore a
mask, so I’m feeling a little sentimental.”
Gwendolyn patted his back and whispered next to his ear with all seriousness, “That’s because I’ve
reserved a permanent spot for you in my heart and only you. I’ve never forgotten about you.”
She had once tried to deceive herself into giving up on that relationship. If Cedrick hadn’t clung to her
then, she might have truly let go.
However, he had repeatedly risked his life for her and even almost vanished from her world. Only then
did she realize how difficult it was for her to forget about that man she had loved deeply for three years.
Cedrick didn’t reply. For some reason, since they arrived in Fairlake the day before, his mood had been
quite low.
She sensed the changes in his state of mind and wondered if something was bothering him or causing
him to feel apprehensive.
“Hubby, are there things about the Wright family in Fairlake that you’ve been hiding from me?”
Cedrick buried his face in her neck, obscuring his facial expression from her view, but his back stiffened
slightly.
After hesitating for a while, he asked in an undertone, “If I lie, will I be punished?”
Gwendolyn pinched his waist while wearing a solemn expression and responded threateningly, “What
do you think?”
Cedrick remained silent for a long while. A trace of indescribable despondency laced his deep, husky
voice. “But I don’t want to say it. You’ve divorced Maverick, Gwenny. Besides, even Maverick’s identity
was fake during the marriage. The Wright family in Fairlake no longer has anything to do with you,
Gwenny, so you don’t have to know.”
Gwendolyn frowned. The more Cedrick said that the more curious she became. What kind of secret
can make Cedrick stay up all night and stare blankly out the window early in the morning? He even
acted strangely, hugging and kissing me passionately.
While she was thinking, Cedrick got to his feet and pulled away from her. “Let’s go, Darling. Get ready.
We’ll return to the Wright residence to pay them a visit in half an hour.”
Gwendolyn didn’t probe further. She merely nodded and went into the bathroom to freshen up.
No matter what secret Cedrick was holding, going to the Wright residence would definitely provide her
with some clues to dispel her doubts.
