I Have Returned
An hour later, Cedrick and Gwendolyn arrived at the Wright residence.
The butler and housekeepers had just woken up and started their work. However, the tranquility was
shattered by the piercing cries of a baby echoing through the halls.
Sheralyn and Ajax had their hands full.
The cries had also disturbed Frida, who stormed over to investigate, her scathing remarks ready on her
tongue.
“Ajax, what kind of father are you? You may excel in managing a company, but what good is that if you
can’t even handle your own child?”
“Yes, you’re right, Mom. I’ll be more attentive next time.”
“What’s the use of being more attentive next time? I’ve heard that line eight hundred times, and you
haven’t changed a bit,” Frida snapped, her words dripping with frustration.
Ajax, who was focused on soothing the crying infant, merely offered a placating response. “Yes, Mom.
You’re right.”
Huh?” Frida, still groggy from waking up early, was instantly provoked. “Did you even hear what I said?
All you know how to do is brush me off!”
“Mom, you’re right.”
Sheralyn couldn’t help but chuckle at the scene. When she realized her mother was about to unleash
her anger, she swiftly intervened, “Mom, instead of standing there arguing, why don’t you come and
help us soothe the baby? He’s been crying all morning. We can’t figure out what’s wrong.”
Annoyed with her seemingly incompetent daughter and son-in-law, Frida begrudgingly walked over and
muttered, “You two are such terrible parents! If your brother was still around, he and Gwendolyn would
certainly handle all this effortlessly. I wouldn’t even have to worry!”
When Gwendolyn and Cedrick arrived at the entrance of the Wright residence, carrying bags filled with
gifts, they were greeted by a cacophony of noise.
The butler hurriedly emerged from the villa, his eyes widening in astonishment when he spotted the
man standing beside Gwendolyn.
“M-Mr. Wright?”
His face was filled with disbelief, and he rubbed his eyes to confirm who he was looking at.
They look so alike! Even their aloof demeanor is similar. Yet, upon closer inspection, they seem to be
slightly different.
The butler vividly remembered that Maverick had passed away a year and a half ago.
It was impossible for Maverick to be standing in front of him.
Mixed emotions filled his heart as he mustered a smile and greeted Gwendolyn, “Ms. Harris, have you
returned from Salinsburgh to visit Mrs, and Ms. Wright?”
Gwendolyn nodded and smiled. “I guess you can say that.”
“It’s truly an honor that someone as important as you still remember us. The Wright family is deeply
grateful. The late Old Mr. Wright would surely be pleased. He was right about you, Ms. Harris.”
The butler quickly summoned the servants to assist with carrying Gwendolyn and Cedrick’s gifts.
“May I go to the ancestral hall later and pay respect to Old Mr. Wright? I want to share this news with
him.”
“Of course,” the butter replied. He then turned to the man next to Gwendolyn. “May I know who this is,
Ms. Harris?”
Gwendolyn cast a sidelong glance at Cedrick, a mischievous sparkle in her eyes. “He’s my husband.”
“Oh, I see. You must be Mr. Jenson from Salinsburgh. Your name precedes you, and I must say the
resemblance is striking! Sorry, I mean handsome!” The butler was drawn to Cedrick’s captivating face
and almost blurted out the wrong words.
Gwendolyn stifled a laugh, while Cedrick remained silent and aloof by her side.
“Ms. Harris, Mr. Jenson, please wait in the living room for a while. I’ll inform Mrs. and Ms. Wright of your
arrival.”
“Thank you.”
Gwendolyn hooked her arm around Cedrick’s, and together they entered the Wright residence.
It had been over a year since they last visited, and they couldn’t help noticing the changes.
The once lavish rose gardens that Frida adored had been dismantled, replaced by a lush lawn with a
swing set and a children’s slide.
As they entered the grand hall, they noticed that all the beloved antique yellow rosewood furniture had
been replaced with soft fabric couches and rounded coffee tables, designed with child safety in mind.
Cedrick scanned the villa, taking in the changes that had occurred in the year and a half he had been
away The furnishings and decor no longer carried the familiar ambiance he had known in his ten years
stay. They seemed foreign and distant.
Gwendolyn observed his expression in silence, understanding the impact these changes had on him.
After a few minutes, they heard hurried footsteps approaching.
Frida, Sheralyn, and Ajax, who was carrying the baby, rushed down the stairs to greet their
distinguished guests.
As Frida descended the steps, she caught sight of Cedrick’s imposing figure from afar.
A surge of familiarity washed over her, causing her heart to race and her steps to quicken. When she
finally saw the man’s face clearly, tears welled up in her eyes and streamed down her cheeks
uncontrollably.
“My son, my son is really alive!” She sobbed and hugged Cedrick as if she had experienced endless
longing and suffering.
Cedrick caught her in his arms, allowing her to hold onto him and sob uncontrollably.
Just then, the butler interjected. “Mrs. Wright, he’s not Mr. Wright. He’s Mr. Jenson, Ms. Harris’
husband.”
“My son is Gwendolyn’s husband. Gwendolyn’s husband must be my son,” Frida shrieked in-between
sobs.
Upon hearing her words, Cedrick and Gwendolyn exchanged surprised glances.
When did she realize it? When did her mind become so sharp
Sheralyn hurriedly stepped forward and said in panic, “Mom, what are you saying? My brother and
Gwendolyn divorced so long ago. The man you’re holding is Gwendolyn’s current husband, the heir of
the Jenson family. He’s also known as the boss behind the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He’s
renowned for his ruthless and decisive nature. You need to be careful not to offend him, or you might
end up detained…”
Her last statement jolted Frida back to reality.
She lifted her tear-streaked face, gazed at Cedrick’s features once more, and then turned to face
Gwendolyn.
Frida still held the letter that Maverick had given her a year and a half ago.
Her son had long been dead, and the adopted son who had taken his place had also died.
It was impossible for her son to be the head of the Jenson family.
Suddenly, her mind snapped back to reality, and her fingers trembled as she released her grip on
Cedrick
“I’m sorry, Mr. Jenson. I-I didn’t mean to offend you. 1- she stammered.
Before she could continue, Cedrick gently clasped her wrinkled wrist and smiled warmly. “Mom, it’s me.
I have returned.”
The room fell into stunned silence as those words hung in the air.
Tears welled up in Frida’s eyes. The sheer happiness that she was experiencing made it difficult for her
to digest Cedrick’s revelation.
“You… called me Mom?”
She turned to Gwendolyn to confirm his response.
Gwendolyn nodded to signify that Cedrick’s words were true.
Frida was overwhelmed with joy. “I knew it! Gwendolyn loved my son deeply. Once she makes up her
mind, there’s no turning back. How could she possibly be engaged to someone else and be in love just
a few months after reclaiming her identity? It must be you. It’s really you…”
Sheralyn’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Unlike Frida, she could not accept the truth.
“Oh my goodness! How can my brother be the heir of the Jenson family? Is he not a part of the Wright
family? Mom, is he the illegitimate child of you and someone from the Jenson family? Then I’m…”
She started imagining herself as a discarded illegitimate daughter of a prominent family, caught up in a
dramatic storyline.
