large. If we were marry, the gossip would be relentless.” Mandy’s voice was laced with complexity and
sorrow.
Shirley asked Cynthia in a whisper, “What’s happening,?”
Cynthia did not reply, only squeezed Shirley’s hand. Shirley did not ask further, deciding to wait until
they were back in the

“Mom, what are you saying?” Michelle was completely confused. Had they not just discussed her need

Mandy did not answer her question. She just looked at Jonathan, her eyes red and filled with a mix of

hide her feelings.
In this manner, she gave the impression of having been driven into a corner with no other choice.
Jonathan wondered if she might have misunderstood Cynthia.
“Hold on. Is there a misunderstanding between you and Cynthia?” he called after her.
Mandy, her eyes red and raw, threw Cynthia a glance but remained silent. This scene left Shirley and
Jonathan instinctively believing that Mandy had misunderstood Cynthia’s words, unaware of Mandy’s
charade.
