“What’s there to listen to? At your age, you have no girlfriend, and all you do is eat and drink at my
expense, and you dar provoke me,” Mrs. Green was relentless in her pursuit, adamant to set him
straight.
“I’m innocent!” Zayn was hopping and jumping around the living room
“Hahaha!” An identical voice resounded from his phone, mocking him with laughter.
Zayn knew perfectly well that Matthew had set him up. He slammed his phone onto the floor to avoid
angering his mother further, shattering it into pieces. Thankfully, the voice stopped.
He exhaled a heavy breath, grateful that there was nothing significant on his phone.
“Mom, I…”
Smack!
The feather duster Landed on his body. Zayn hopped up, his comical facial expression distorted in
pain.
“Ouch!” His hair flopped down over his forehead as he winced.
“You dare break things in front of me?” Mrs. Green swung the duster at him again
Zayn knew his mother’s temper all too well; the best strategy now was to admit his fault, “I was wrong!”
“Can I catch you or not?”
“You can!”
“Do such things again, and I’ll beat you hard.”
“Yes, Ma.”
With his prompt admission, the incident was finally put to rest. He hastily gullped down a few bites of
his meal, grabbed his SIM card, and headed upstairs.
Lucidly, he had plenty of spare phones. Otherwise, he would not even be able to vent his frustration at
Matthew
Matthew and Cynthia were sharing a meal at the time. Cynthia, although not a picky eater, knew how to
appreciate good cooking. Matthew, her Captain, certainly had culinary skills that she admired.
“Captain,” she spoke up between bites.
“Hmm?” He responded.
“What does your family do?” Cynthia felt a curiosity to know more about him.
“They run a business. Why do you ask?” Matthew replied seriously.
Cynthia was not sure if he was telling the truth or not. She had heard rumors about Captain’s well–off
family background but never confirmed them. She had no intentions of doing so as it was not
necessary.
“Just asking. By the way, if you ever want to visit your parents, let me know. You don’t need to take
leave,” Cynthia replied nonchalantly, continuing to enjoy her meal.
Since his retirement, it seemed that Matthew had not once gone home.
They’ve asked me to come home only when I find a girlfriend,” Matthew confessed, setting a trap.
Innocently, Cynthia fell right into it. “You can’t go home without a girlfriend?”
“Right. Do you want to be my girlfriend so I can finally go home?TM
“Try Gaby,” Cynthia suggested, completely unaware of the subtle confession she was countering. She
was offering genuine advice. “She’s lively and cute. She’d be great to fake a relationship with.”
Matthew’s thin lips curved upward into a smile. There was a look of helpless amusement in his eyes.
Cynthia was such a tough nut to crack. He started to wonder how Joshua managed to win her over.
“Cynthia,” he began.
“Hmm?”
“How did you meet Joshua? You seem to have a rather placid personality.” Matthew felt there was still
much he needed to katow
At this, Cynthia paused.
She recalled the day she first met Joshua. Even after two years, the memory
