Cynthia tidied up a guest room and told Joshua, “You’ll sleep in this room. There are new toiletries in
the bathroom. If you need anything, just come and find me.”
“Okay,” Joshua stood there, obediently agreeing
Cynthia added, “Freshen up and go to sleep.”
Joshua stood still.
Recalling Sean’s remarks, Cynthia asked, “What’s wrong?”
Joshua lowered his head, fidgeting with his fingers before finally speaking up, “I don’t have clean
clothes to change into.”
He did not want to trouble Cynthia, but….
Cynthia replied, “Go ahead and wash up. I’ll borrow a set of clothes for you from next door.”
Matthew’s and Joshua’s body types were similar, so borrowing his pajamas should not be a problem.
As for his everyday clothes, she would have Yoel bring two sets tomorrow.
Just as she said that, there was a knock on the door.
Cynthia opened the door and saw Matthew holding a bag, handing it to her.
“You probably don’t have suitable pajamas for him. These are new and haven’t been worn.”
“Captain.” Cynthia was surprised. She never expected Captain to be so thoughtful.
Matthew smiled “Take them for him.”
Cynthia thanked him and planned to bring the clothes inside for Joshua, but she saw Joshua standing
there when she turned
around.
She handed him the clothes and mentioned that they were from Matthew.
“Thank you,” Joshua mumbled as he held the clothes. He felt gloomy and did not want to talk to
anyone, but he knew that when someone helped him, he should say thank you.
Cynthia would probably think he was a bad kid if he did not.
Matthew and Cynthia were shocked as neither of them expected that response.
Joshua took the clothes and went to take a shower, behaving exceptionally well.
Matthew asked, “What happened?”
“Sean said he has amnesia, and his mental state is similar to that of a five–year–old. There’s no
medical treatment for this condition, we can only wait for him to recover on his own and have monthly
check–ups with Sean,” Cynthia explained in
detail as she led Matthew to the living room.
Matthew was surprised, “What’s your plan?”
“I’ll talk to Uncle Felix tomorrow. If he wants to take him back, I’ll let him return to Jiverton. If not, I’ll
have to take care of him for now,” Cynthia said.
“Okay,” Matthew agreed with her plan.
“Captain.”
“Yeah?”
“Do you have experience raising children? I don’t know how to take care of Joshua in his current
condition,” Cynthia asked.
“Just treat him like a live–year–old. If you’re unsure, I can help you raise him with you,” Matthew replied
calmly.
2/2
Cynthia hesitated for a moment and then agreed, “Okay.”
That night, Joshua did not sleep well. In his dreams, he kept seeing blurry images of himself and
Cynthia. Whenever he tried to see clearly what was happening, the images would tum into a bright light
and disappear.
It was the same repetitive pattern in every brief dream.
As for Cynthia, after she finished washing up and lay in brd, Sean’s words kept echoing in her mind,
especially the part, ” Based on Joshua’s actions after he got injured, he truly loved you”
Love?
She did not think so.
