Marlinie took a deep breath. “I don’t want to judge others, but don’t count your brother with them. He
shouldn’t be with them. He cares about you a lot.”
Ellinor scoffed. “To me, there’s no difference.”

was still a child back then. He had his limitations, so we can’t blame him.”
Ellinor looked at her mother. “You don’t want me to settle the score with the Howards?”
Marlinie gave her a bitter smile. “What score to settle? It’s been so many years; I don’t want to bring up
those things anymore. I came back this time because Bertha told me she saw someone who looked a
lot like my daughter. Now that I’ve found you, I’ll leave this place again and let the past be the past.”
