"Yes."
Xander's words made Nicole and Samuel excited.
"Who is it? Do we know that person?"
Nicole felt that she and Samuel had been involved in quite a few affairs, and they had exposed many
old cases. As she and Samuel might know a bit of those people, they asked.
Xander looked at Nicole and said, "Perhaps you don't know him. The man hardly appears in front of
people and has been working behind the scenes. He is Mr. Ethan Quain's assistant. I remember that
he is an unnoticeable man. What impressed me the most was that he wore glasses and never looked
straight at people. Being a yes-man, he always lowered his head. However, he learned quickly
whatever Mr. Quain taught him, and Mr. Quain had the intention to groom him to be his successor. Elvis
had captured Mr. Quain for genetic research, and the man was also involved. To protect him, Mr. Quain
did everything he could and sent him away. From then on, there was no news of the man anymore."
"Back then, few people knew about the gene data that Elvis and the Green family had studied.
Basically, people who knew the matter had all been captured and sent to the island by Elvis. They were
unable to get out of the island for the rest of their lives, and some of them even died there. So, apart
from Elvis himself, only a few people knew the secret. However, it was obvious that the person behind
the scenes had targets for the study. The time was coincidental. Not long after that guy left, Dr. Miller
began to study genetics and even created Laurence. Recently, I have been investigating Dr. Miller. It is
said that more than twenty years ago, his study on human genetics failed many times. He captured
several couples with the wife pregnant for research. But Laurence was the only one who survived and
has lived for so many years without any rejection. Thus, we guess that Laurence may have been the
specimen they studied from the beginning."
Hearing Xander call Laurence a specimen, Nicole felt somewhat uncomfortable.
No one would happy that a healthy person was called a specimen. Thinking of all the things that
Laurence had endured for so many years, Nicole felt upset.
"Where is Laurence now?"
"In the laboratory."
Audrey looked serious. She whispered, "Although Laurence doesn't go berserk, the cells in his body
divide too quickly. As we haven't found a way to restrain the division, we temporarily don't want him to
come out of the laboratory, which is also his intention. The defense system of the laboratory is strong.
Even if he really goes berserk, he can't rush out and hurt people. Also, the massacre seemed to have
triggered his Berserk Gene. He couldn't suppress his emotions, so he locked himself in the laboratory.
But don't worry. Someone will deliver him food. It will be fine."
Hearing Laurence's experience, Samuel felt bitter.
"Is my brother also involved in the research?"
Xander nodded.
"After all, I have been on the island for some time. And although I wasn't involved in the research, I
could hear what they talked about every day. I've recorded some of the data they studied and gave it to
Davon. He would soon find a way to achieve the balance. As for the rest, we can't help. Your mother
and I hired some medical professors to study the topic. But unfortunately, there was no progress. We
were planning to capture Dr. Miller, but it was unexpected that the man behind the scenes intercepted
us halfway."
Xander sighed, feeling sorry when he thought of Neville's death.
Nicole asked in shock, "Was Dr. Miller murdered by the one behind the scenes?"
"Yes, we had a clash. But that person was only trying to kill Dr. Miller, so we were late to save him."
"What's the name of that assistant?"
"It seems to be Martin, but this name is too ordinary. Turn on the computer and search, and you'll find
that many people use the name. So it's not easy to confirm it."
Xander and Audrey were upset.
Lucas thought for a moment and said, "Grandpa, does this Martin have any special experiences? For
example, before he went to the island, where did he work? Perhaps I can do some help."
Hearing the words, Xander nodded in relief, "The man called Martin has always been unnoticeable. It is
said that he was a student supervised by Mr. Quain in university, and has been studying after Mr. Quain
all the time. When Elvis captured him, he was already in his forties. He was rather simple-hearted and
usually didn't talk much. He just did what he needed to do. When he left the island, he was almost fifty.
Not long before he left, I was captured. So I don't know exactly what he looked like. People who've
seen him are dead."
"Then it's very hard to find the man."
Everyone became quiet and they were upset.
Hearing the name Martin, Nicole inexplicably thought of Tim's mother, Martha.
"Mom, do you still remember Martha?"
Audrey put on a serious face.
She surely knew Martha who was her younger sister, but she wondered why Nicole would ask about
her.
"Yes. What's the matter? Is there something wrong with her?"
Nicole didn't know why, but she had a feeling that Martha was related to the matter.
Samuel stiffened and then said, "Mom, we find that there is something wrong with the nursing home
where Martha has lived for more than twenty years. Dr. Miller was hiding there when he escaped. And
the lab inside is perfect. It did not seem to have been built on a temporary basis. I'm afraid Martha has
been working for someone these twenty years. I wonder if that person is Martha's biological father."
The words made Audrey's expression change.
Martha was not Mr. Shaw's child. Audrey knew it. Because of this, her mother took Martha away from
the Shaw family and didn't contact the Shaws anymore even when she died. Audrey actually had a lot
of questions, but with her mother's death, everything became a puzzle that no one could answer.
However, Samuel and Nicole's words made her suspicious.
Did her mom know who the dangerous man was from the beginning?
And Martha knew who her biological father was?
If so, why didn't mom tell her dad?
Back then, the public opinion had indeed left her insulted mom with no right to speak, and she had to
bear some of the blame that was not hers. However, dad didn't blame mom back then. Why didn't mom
tell the truth?
Audrey didn't know the reason. She was muddled and couldn't find a clue.
"If Martha knew who her biological father was, why did she keep it a secret for so many years? She
didn't say it when Audrey was young?"
"Perhaps Martha didn't know it when she was young, and when she grew up, she found it. Or maybe
there were other reasons. But I always have a feeling that Martha works for her biological father. Back
then, when we captured Laurel, we intended to use her and Martha to lure the person behind the
scenes out. Unfortunately, we failed in the end. The person is too shrewd."
Samuel's eyes filled with anger, making him look cruel. He thought that this kind of person was like a
venomous snake, hiding in a cold place waiting for an opportunity to move. Anyone who was bitten by it
would be seriously hurt or even die. Now, more and more people around him paid attention to the
person. He wouldn't let anyone get hurt.
Nicole frowned. She felt that there was something they didn't figure it out. But what was it?
Everything was like a puzzle, making it impossible for her to find the clue. A thought suddenly flashed
through her mind, but it disappeared so fast that she didn't catch it but could only sigh.
"It's not easy to investigate this Martin, but he was forty or fifty years old at that time. Now, more than
twenty years have passed. He should be in his 70s. Being such an ambitious old man, he is either a
terrorist or someone from an unfriendly country. We may look into the matter in this regard."
Nicole's words made Samuel, Xander, and Audrey stiffen for a moment. They felt they suddenly found
a way.
"That's right. I remember dad said that the person who insulted my mother was a terrorist. But it's
strange that a terrorist came to the Seapolis City alone just to insult my mother. That doesn't make
sense. If he intended to take revenge on my father, wouldn't it be better to kill us? Why bother making
things difficult for my mother?"
Audrey had never found an answer to this question. She had asked her mother, but her mother had
never given her an answer. Also, her mother had never contacted her since she left home with Martha.
She once found her mother, but her mother was cold and even asked her to leave and she did not
allow her to come again.
She knew that her mother loved her, but her attitude then was strange.
Hearing Audrey's words, Nicole suddenly asked, "Mom, where is grandma's hometown?"
Audrey thought for a moment, but she couldn't think of a specific address.
"I don't know. I've never heard your grandma mention it. When I was a child, I asked her about it. But
she said that she was an orphan. Later on, the family suffered famine and her adoptive parents died.
She lived alone in the Seapolis City and got to know my father."
Hearing what Audrey said, Nicole felt even more confused.
"I think we should investigate grandma's identity."
"What are you suspecting?"
Audrey looked at her daughter. Nicole was smarter than her. Usually, Nicole wouldn't take things
emotionally, which was similar to Xander.
Xander was also very appreciative. He looked at Nicole with a faint smile.
Nicole was a little hesitant. But Samuel held her palm. The warmth made her calm down.
She smiled at Samuel and said in a low voice, "I suspect that grandma knew Martin before. However, I
don't have any evidence. This is just a hunch. That's why I said it would be better to start with
grandma's identity."
Audrey stiffened. She knew that it was unfilial of her to suspect her deceased mother, but now it was
more important to find out who was behind the scenes.
"Alright, I agree to check the identity of my mother first."
Hearing Audrey's words, Nicole felt bitter. She looked at Audrey. She had a lot to say but didn't know
where to start.
Xander smiled faintly and hugged Audrey tightly. He whispered, "It's cold here at night. The room is
heated. As long as you stay in the room, it won't be too freezing."
Nicole nodded, but Samuel learned something else from Xander's words.
